Babylon is Not a Waiting Room

Scripture
Jeremiah 29:1–14

The Jewish exiles were sitting by the rivers of Babylon, their bags practically packed, constantly checking their watches. They were utterly convinced this deportation was just a temporary glitch. They were waiting for the rescue chariot to arrive any minute so they could get back to their real lives in Jerusalem. But then a letter from the prophet Jeremiah arrives, and God’s instructions absolutely shock them: Unpack your bags. Build houses. Plant gardens. Get married. Pray for the peace of this pagan city. They were going to be stuck in Babylon for seventy years. God hadn't forgotten them, and the rescue was definitely coming—but not today. He was bluntly telling them to stop treating their current location like a miserable waiting room.

How often do we play that exact same game? We put our entire lives on pause and whisper, "As soon as this medical treatment is over… As soon as I get out of this financial hole… As soon as the kids graduate… then I'll start really living." But the Almighty does not want you pacing the floor of your circumstances, doing nothing but staring at the exit door. He is calling you to passionately, faithfully live exactly where you are today. Plant a garden in your Babylon. Nurture your relationships. Do your quiet, daily work with stunning excellence. Be an absolute blessing to the people in your messy, imperfect neighborhood. True biblical hope isn't just crossing your fingers for a better tomorrow; it is rolling up your sleeves and faithfully embracing the exact life God has handed you today.
