Grace in the Rubble

Scripture
Lamentations 3:19–33

The prophet is standing right in the middle of a literal disaster zone. Everywhere he looks, there is nothing but smouldering ruin and bitter memories. His mind is trapped in a suffocating loop of grief. But right there, at rock bottom, he makes a massive, defiant decision. He refuses to let the tragedy do all the talking. He deliberately grabs his wandering thoughts by the collar and forces his mind to remember the breathtaking mercy of God. And the exact second he does that? Hope is born.

Biblical hope is not a fragile emotion tied to how good your morning coffee was. It is built on the gritty, intentional discipline of remembering. Let’s be honest: the human mind is a master at replaying our failures, our hurts, and our anxieties on a constant, high-definition loop. The pain is absolutely real, but it is not the entire truth! The city might have fallen, but the steadfast love of the Lord has not expired. The very fact that the sun came up this morning is heaven's silent, glowing guarantee that God's mercy hasn't run out. Don't pretend your problems don't exist today. But deliberately interrupt your worry. Grab a piece of paper and write down three specific moments where the Father carried you through the fire. This isn't just an exercise in positive thinking; it is the holy redemption of your memory. When you make the Lord your ultimate "portion," the things you lack can no longer define who you are. He isn't just a slice of your pie; He is the entire feast. A heart that stubbornly remembers grace right in the middle of the ruins is a heart that is already opening the door for tomorrow's light.
