The Unempty Throne

Scripture
Ezekiel 1:1–3, 26–28; 2:1–5

Ezekiel wasn't anywhere near the holy, familiar streets of Jerusalem. He was sitting in the dusty, depressing refugee camps of Babylon, surrounded by exiled captives. But right there, in the absolute middle of nowhere, the sky ripped open. Ezekiel saw the blazing, breathtaking glory of God. He realized a massive, life-altering truth: the throne of heaven was not empty. The Jewish people had lost their homeland, their beautiful temple, and their royal government. But they hadn't lost their God. The Almighty isn't just the local deity of Jerusalem; His sovereign rule stretches straight over the skyline of Babylon, too.

We play this exact same mental game, don't we? We silently tell ourselves, "If I could just get my old life back, then God could use me." "If I could just get out of this massive mess, then I could finally hear His voice." But the presence of God simply refuses to be boxed into your preferred zip code or your ideal circumstances. He speaks right in the middle of your deepest, most agonizing loss. Before God ever gave Ezekiel a new assignment, He gave him a vision of His glory. Stop staring at the rearview mirror today. Stop obsessing over what you've lost, and lift your eyes to the King who is still firmly seated on the throne. Your location might have drastically changed, but the God who calls your name has not moved an inch.
